M$ Live Tiles® baaad copycat from Android ICS

Vole has been marketing Windows® 8 Live Tiles® as the latest and greatest since sliced bread (as usual).

Unfortunately this Chinese video of my current Tablet proves that Live Tiles® are nothing but baaad copycat from Google Android ICS.

Microsoft® INNOVA~1® at its best :-D (evil laughter)

On Android ICS they are simply widgets, which show the latest updates of your email and social media, or whatever widget you place on one of the preferred multiple "virtual desktops". You simply have the ability to "browse" trough the history, by tipping the widgets and scrolling down (like in a web-browser).

Windows® 8 Live Tiles® on the other hand are showing a "history" of the most recent updates in a "interactive" manner. Meaning text is scrolled continually on multiple Tiles®. At first this seems quite funny and sexy, but trust me, it gets on your nerves within 15 minutes.

Poor Vole, desperately trying to catch up with GNU/Linux desktop and Android and miserably failing, by providing the most user hostile and butt ugly user environment Ever!

The Traditional Desktop PC is Dying

I remember a post from Mark Kent (in my favourite Usenet Newsgroup comp.os.linux.advocacy), stating that the end of the Desktop was near. I didn't argue with Mark about that article, liked his plausible statement, yet it had a "hum, ho" and "we'll see" effect on me.

Mobile devices like Smartphones and Tablets where somewhat underpowered, but the times have changed.

Last week I bought a new TomTec 10 Ultimate (9.7 Inch) Tablet, running Android ICS 4.0.3.

It's a "El Cheapo", marketed at least under 4 different "Brands" in The Netherlands and Belgium only and it's also available in the UK under yet another brand:

Anyway, it's a nice tablet for that small amount of money and it provides everything one could ever wish for.

I bought a HDMI cable and a MicroHDMI to HDMI converter plug, which I connect to my Linux Powered Samsung 32 inch TV and plug in the USB receiver of my whireless Logitech Keyboard and mouse set. And there you have it: another pseudo desktop running on Android ICS 4.0.3.

Once it's rooted I'm able to install ether Debian GNU/Linux or Ubuntu on it in a chrooted environment, via Linux Installer from Google Play.

So why on Earth should I invest in another traditional Desktop or Laptop Computer? I can have it all on one nice and mobile device.

I am looking forward to buy a "Ubuntu For Android" phone.

Mark Kent was right all the way, albeit ahead of his time: the traditional desktop is passé!

Bart Smit Tomtec Ultimate 10: Het ultieme tablet voor € 199,--

Mijn broer GL1MST heeft van de kerstman (hijzelf) een Bart Smit TomTec Ultimate 10 Tablet Execellent, voor de zeer schappelijke prijs van € 199,-- gekregen. Het tablet draait Android 2.3 "Gingerbread" en doet voor die prijs niet onder voor de Samsung Galaxy TAB en vergelijkbare duurdere tablets.

Het volgende is overgenomen uit de beschrijving van Bart Smit.

• 9.7" IPS scherm (25 cm doorsnede);
• Multitouch;
• Cortex A8 1.2 GHz chip;
• 1 GB DDR3 werkgeheugen;
• 4 GB opslaggeheugen;
• Micro SD/SDHC slot;
• HDMI output;
• Hoge capaciteit accu;
• 2 camera's;
• Luidspreker;
• Video-, Muziek- en Fotoweergave;
• Internetbrowser, e-mail;
• Wi-Fi en USB ingang;
• Inclusief oplader;

Nog in de specificaties bij Bart Smit, nog in de handleiding wordt om de een of andere mysterieuze reden geen woord gerept over de Bluetooth ondersteuning, die wel degelijk op het apparaat aanwezig is.

Uiteraard mocht ik het tablet eens flink aan de tand voelen, tijdens de kerstdagen (die ik met veel plezier bij GL1MST hebt doorgebracht). Ik heb een Bluetooth switch en Bluetooth File transfer widget geïnstalleerd en dit werkte formidabel!

De DUN verbinding is nog niet getest, maar tijdens het nieuwjaarsweekend blijf ik ook weer bij GL1MST logeren, dus zal er weer heerlijk geknutseld worden. Ik verwacht dat een DUN verbinding met een Smartphone ook zonder al te veel moeite te realiseren valt.

In tegenstelling tot mijn TomTec WM8650 7 Tablet, draaide Skype en aDOSbox als een zonnetje op de TomTec Ultimate 10 Excellent.

Mijn conclusie: de TomTec Ultimate 10 Excellent is een fantastisch tablet, met alles er op en er aan (2 camera's, een micro en full sized USB socket, een snelle (1 Ghz) CPU, voldoende RAM (1 GiB (werkgeheugen)) Mini HDMI socket, (ongedocumenteerde) Bluetooth. Kortom: het ultieme tablet voor een habbekrats.

De natte droom van iedere zichzelf respecterende geek!

Activity roundup: Hack in da B0X!

Last week I've had a lot of fun "Hackin' in da B0X" whether it was my dead cheap Chinese Bart Smit TomTec WM8650 (Android 2.2 "Froyo") 7" Tablet or any of my other computers.

TomTec WM8650 Tablet.

Upgraded my baby with the latest (stable) Universal Uberoid WM8650 1.5.2 HoneyCombMOD v8 custom ROM.

Lots of great stuff provided by this update, including more support fort HUAWEI USB MODEM dongles.

There fore I've been researching how to unlock my own USB dongle, which is a HUAWEI e180. I unlocked it successfully (tested on laptop), yet it's unfortunately NOT supported by Uberoid (yet).

However, getting the fscking thing unlocked, was quite satisfying. I can help other people with it from now on for free (gratis)  :-)

Since the HUAWEI e180 didn't work on my tablet, I tried to figure out, how to eventually get a Bluetooth USB dongle to work on the Tablet. What I need is a module (.ko) and the sources of the 2.6.32-9 kernel. Unfortunately kernel.org was compromised lately and thus the provided links don't work ATM. Beside that I need Bluez to get it working.

I put the Bluetooth project on hold, until kernel.org is back up again.

Emulators.

In case you've missed it: I am a fanatical Emulation and Virtualisation enthusiast, so I tried to get a couple of emulators on my Bart Smit TomTec WM8650 (Android 2.2 "Froyo") 7" Tablet to work.

I've got the Android ports of Vice (CBM 8-bit series), UAE (Classic Commodore-Amiga series) and fMSX (MSX series) emulators to work flawlessly.

The only emulator which doesn't work is aDOSbox. If I fire it up, the screen goes black for a couple of seconds and then returns to the "Home screen". IOW: it crashes and does nothing else left.

Microsoft Windows 7.

While not all of the past week's challenges where entirely successfully. I had the desire to install Microsoft Windows 7 on my AMD Athlon XP 2000+ 1 GiB RAM desktop, for quite some time.

Microsoft enthusiast are claiming that Windows 7 is much less resource hogging then Vista and that it should work on my Athlon XP. Thus I jumped on the Windows 7 bandwagon once again to compare with desktop Linux.

Not your average Joe Windows 7 installation.

A small complication is that the DVD-writer on that machine reads CD's but for some mysterious reason lacks to read DVD's for quite some time now. Thus I was not able to install Windows 7 from a DVD.

I have a ISO image of the Windows 7 DVD-ROM and a unpacked version (in a subdirectory) on my Samsung 1.5 TiB USB HDD, which I use to boot Kubuntu 11.04 on my Acer Aspire 7220 laptop, which I currently use as a "Pseudo Desktop". I have a external wireless keyboard and mouse connected to it and it is connected to my Samsung (Linux powered) 32" LED TV. The partitions on that HDD are ext4fs, which MS Windows can't read out of the box.

Thus to be able to install Windows 7 I booted the machine from the System Rescue CD and create two NTFS partition on the 250 GiB HDD of that machine. The first partition as the target partition and the second partition to copy the the unpacked DVD-ROM (to be used as a install partition).

Installed Windows XP temporary on the target partition and installed Windows 7 finally from within Windows XP.

Comparing with Desktop Linux.

There was a time that Linux was a geek OS, but that is a long time ago. Most of us got a bit tired of the main press "Year of the Linux Desktop" stories. If we are honest we can conclude that Microsoft Windows is the underdog by now. In contrast to Linux, Windows is almost ready for the desktop.

Microsoft enthusiasts have been claiming that Windows 7 doesn't require the much criticized reboots. I have no idea where they got this "knowledge" but it simply isn't true. I don't know how many times I had to reboot Windows 7, anyway it was many times. Also the update mechanism in contrast to your typical Desktop Linux distro is quite user hostile and time consuming. Plus the lack of a package manager makes Microsoft Windows a user hostile environment and to be fair, after a couple of updates and installing some software, it became dog slow (within 24 hours).

Conclusion.

I've had a interesting and fun week and I'm rather disappointed by Windows 7. It's not worth the afford wasting money on it. I will replace it with Gentoo Linux within 30 days.

TomTec 7" Android 2.2 tablet: goedkoop speeltje voor geeks [Update]

Ik heb me op vrijdag 22 juli j.l. de stoute schoenen aangetrokken en heb me zo'n spotgoedkoop TomTec 7" Android 2.2 tablet bij de speelgoed winkelketen Bart Smit gekocht. En ik ben er razend enthousiast over!

Voor het bedrag van € 100,-- mag je uiteraard niet te veel verwachten en er ontbreken dan ook een aantal essentiële functies aan.

• Geen G3 of ander mobiel netwerk;
• geen Bluetooth;
• geen DVI;
• slechts één camera aan de voorkant.

Om iets zinnigs met het tablet te kunnen doen, heb je dus altijd een WiFi verbinding nodig en als er in je stad of dorp geen dekkende (open) WiFi aanbieders zijn (zoals hier in Maastricht) heb je dus best een probleem :-/

Echter voor thuisgebruik en wat met Android 2.2 te klooien, is dit zeker een snoepje van een toestel. Ik ben er in ieder geval ontzettend blij mee ;-)

Als verstokte GNU/Linux gebruiker, voel ik mij meteen thuis op dit toestel, want Android is van Linux afgeleid en dat is goed te merken.

Rooten maar!

Op Androidworld kwam ik iemand tegen die razend enthousiast over de HcH Uberoid WM8650 1.3.0 HYBRiD HoneyCombMOD v6 FiNAL was. Hoewel ik nog een volledige Android maagd was, kon ik de verleiding niet weerstaan om hier eens mee aan de slag te gaan en ik heb er zeker geen spijt van ;-)

Deze custom ROM verschaft toegang tot de officiële Market, voert een aantal optimalisaties toe (het tablet wordt veel responsiever en de batterij gaat een stuk langer mee). Levert root-access en een HoneyComb look alike (Android 3.x voor tablets) thema.

Ik was erg blij dat BusyBox meegeleverd werd, nog de Android Terminal Emulator er aan toegevoegd, waardoor ik controle over het tablet heb.

Micro SD-kaart.

Ik heb uit de Android Market Place MSN Mercury Free geïnstalleerd, omdat ik met mijn vriend via MSN communiceer. Dit werkte in eerste instantie niet, omdat MSN Mercury Free een Micro SD-kaart eist.

Ik had nog zo'n Micro SD-kaartje en het was een hele toer om het ding aan de praat te krijgen. Ik heb door de jaren heen geleerd, nogal voorzichtig met elektronica te zijn.

Nadat ik de Micro-SD-kaart met veel geweld in de sleuf had gewurmd werkte hij pas.

Aansluitingen.

Hoewel het tablet een aantal voorzieningen mist, wordt er een "USB Dongle" meegeleverd, met een reguliere USB, een mini-USB en RJ45 aansluiting. Dit werkt formidabel, zo heb ik mijn draadloze USB toetsenbord- en muis-set er op aangesloten en dit werkte zonder enig probleem. Ook werden de schijven herkend, nadat ik de USB kabel op een van mijn GNU/Linux machines had aangesloten. Het kopiëren van bestanden vanaf het GNU/Linux werkstation, naar het tablet, was dus een fluitje van een cent.

Conclusie.


Het TomTec 7" Android 2.2 tablet, dat voor € 99,99 door Bart Smit wordt aangeboden is ongeschikt voor de veeleisende eindgebruiker, voor de geek die wat met Android wil klooien is het echter het snoepje van de week.
